What to Expect from a Pest Control Treatment

What should you expect from a pest control service? This is the question I get asked the most from customers, and this is because there is so much misleading information out there.
General Pest Treatment
With a general pest treatment, the following are things you should expect from any reputable pest control company:
- Internal & external spray
- Roof void should be treated, if possible
- Dusting powder to cracks and crevices
- Cockroach gel applied to kitchen cupboards
The choice of products will vary slightly from pest controller to pest controller, but all products used should be certified safe to use inside and outside of homes.
The above list is what any treatment should include for a general yearly pest treatment. If there are other problems such as ants, fleas, bedbugs, rats etc, then they will need a more detailed treatment. This is something to discuss with the pests technician on the day of the service.
Working with Professional Pest Controllers
When you call to book in a pest control you should inform the company of any particular problems you may be having with a certain type of pest and in what area you are having the problems.
Giving a company as much information over the phone about any issues you may be having with, say cockroaches or ants for instance, will give the technician attending the job a better idea of how to treat it.
Every pest control job can have its problems and, in most cases, each job is very different. For instance, we attended a job for a customer that thought she had a problem with bedbugs as she was being bitten when going into her bedroom. But after a thorough inspection of the room and the rest of the property, it turned out it was dust mites. This can be determined by the location of the bites on the body and the time of the day and night the biting is the worst.
Thorough Inspection
To identify a problem in a home, its best to firstly do a thorough inspection of the property and also ask the customer some question. Getting the information from the customer is the most important part of getting a successful pest control done.
Understanding the Kind of Pests
By understanding what pests you are dealing with will enable the technician to get the job done right first time. With some problem pests such as bedbugs or an infestation of German Cockroaches, it may also be advised by the technician to have a second treatment done a few weeks after the initial treatment has be done.
2nd Pest Control Treatment
The reason for a second treatment so soon after the initial treatment is to reapply any pesticides that may have been wiped away from a clean-up job after the initial treatment.
In the circumstances of an infestation of any type of pest, it is usually advised that a good clean up is done approximately 1-2 weeks after the first treatment.
In the photos below, the customer had a big problem with rats and mice. So we advised that they have the area cleared as there were years of bits and pieces all over the place and this type of situation is a great harbouring place for rodents and cockroaches. To manage pests such as rodents successfully you firstly need to ensure they have nowhere to harbour in or around your property, and that any access points are closed off.
In the photo below is a pest control treatment we did for a customer that was complaining of cockroaches running all over the unit. Once we had arrived and started to flush them out, they were once again running all over the place. This customer was also advised to give the unit a thorough clean after the treatment.
Using a pest control company that understands the harbouring and feeding habits of the many different types of pest we have here in Australia will ensure you get the most out of your treatment.
A pest control service generally comes with a 12 month warranty, but some warranties may differ from this and they are pests such as Fleas, Bedbugs, Lice, Ants, and Spiders.
The reason why warranties can differ from pest to pest is partly to do with the environment that the pests are harbouring in. For instance, you can’t put a 12 month warranty on spiders if you live in a bush retreat or have a garden with lots of flowers and trees as this is the sort of environment that spiders thrive in.
So using a company that fully understand about the different pests we have and the best type of treatment for each pest will ensure you are happy with the service provided and that its safe for the whole family.
