Simple ways to remove carpet stains at home
Between kids, pets, a love for red wine and home cooked meals, getting stains on the carpet is almost inevitable. Removing stains with carpet cleaning can be tough, first of all most carpet tends to hold onto colours and liquids more than we would like and secondly, if you aren’t careful, a bit of well-intentioned rubbing with a cloth can make a small stain a huge smudge.
We’ve got some at home carpet cleaning tips for you the next time a bit of Bolognese sauce goes astray or the kids decide indoor craft is a good idea.
Get onto it quickly
The sooner the better! Blot the stain using paper towel to take out any of the stain you can. The thing you don’t want to do in carpet cleaning emergencies is rub the stain, as this can cause liquid to spread or soak into the carpet lining.
Make a simple at-home solution
Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¼ cup of water and use a cloth to douse the stain immediately. This solution is good for all carpet cleaning dilemmas. Allow the vinegar to take hold for 10-15 minutes. After soaking, use the cloth to remove the stain by dabbing rather than rubbing. If the stain is particularly stubborn, try adding a teaspoon of dish soap to the solution.
Get specific
If you need a carpet cleaning remedy to remove ink or oil from a carpet then an isopropyl alcohol solution will do the trick (nail polish remover is also a good substitute). Dab a cloth with the alcohol and dab the ink or oil spot until it is well drenched. Leave it there for a few minutes before dabbing with a water-dampened cloth or removing with a liquid-friendly vacuum cleaner.
