Hot water
Generally, hot water is not advised. If you have ever tried to get blood out of clothing then you may know all too well the mistake you can make by using hot water. Using hot water on stains actually sets the stain into the fabric.
This is because the fibres of the carpet or material the spill is on opens up when hot water is applied. This then allows the liquid or stain go deeper into the fibres. If there is a time you are not using cold water then the water should be warm.
When should warm water be used?
With most spills you should always blot with a sponge and cold water first. Following this a warm water solution with mild detergent should be applied. The majority of spills need to be sponged with cold water first and then treated with a warm detergent mix. A few of these spills are:
- Coffee and tea
- Fruit juice
- Milk
- Soft drinks
- Tomato sauce
Other spills that require a warm water solution need to be treated with dry cleaning fluid first. These are:
- Make up and nail polish
- Oil and grease
- Ink stains
Alcohol spills and blood stains are a bit trickier. If red wine is spilt on the carpet then salt needs to be applied as soon as possible, then vinegar applied. Other alcoholic beverages should have soda water poured on, after this warm water solution should be used. Blood should be sponged with cold water immediately.
Stains that linger should be seen to by a professional to prevent further damage to your carpet and remove unsightly looks. For the most professional and reliable service to bring your carpet back to its original state contact us at Best 1 Carpet Cleaning.
