Safe Pest Control When You Have Pets at Home
Over the last two weeks, we have been looking after my Aunt’s two birds. They have a great outlook overlooking our garden on the back veranda.
Since we have had the birds, we have noticed some rodent droppings around. The rats and or mice have been attracted by the bird food. I didn’t realise just how messy birds can be. When they eat they just throw the outer part of the seed out, and it can land just about anywhere. Most of the time, it lands outside of the catch tray that the cage sits on.
Rats and Mice
The excess food that has been around has attracted rats and mice, as this is an easy meal for them. It’s not a problem for me as I’m a licensed pest control technician; I’ve set some baits and the problem has been solved.
Placing rodent baits down will obviously give some control over a major problem starting, such as an infestation, and will also stop any rats from nesting in or close to the home. But the baits won’t stop any rodent activity; it merely helps to bring the situation under control. To help stop rats or mice when you have birds or any animal that makes a mess, keep the area clean and tidy.
Rats and mice carry diseases and can also do a lot of damage to homes and also furniture; they can destroy the filling in seats and use it as nesting material. Rats have also been known to do extensive damage to electrical wiring inside the wall cavities; this can be a costly repair so it’s important to have a rodent problem quickly resolved. Rats and mice can squeeze into some very small places, so it’s important to attend to any maintenance issues around the home to help prevent them from entering and making your home theirs.
With owning animals and pets, it’s not only important to try and keep their feeding area clean to prevent rodents. But it’s just as important in preventing other pests that dwell in our homes such as cockroaches and fleas.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are the world’s best scavengers and will probably out live us all, so the best way to deal with these pesky critters is to keep food in stored containers and kitchen bench tops clean. If there is nothing for them to eat they will generally go elsewhere.
Fleas
Fleas can also be a big problem for pet owners, especially during the summer months. As this is the time they are more active, flea eggs can lay dormant in carpets for up to 12 months, and only emerge when there is a blood meal. Fleas can detect when there is a blood meal from the vibrations in the ground as we walk, and this is the time they will come to life. Keeping on top of your dog’s baths and flea treatments is very important during summer. They should have a flea treatment done every month during the warmer months. Some opted for a 12 month injection. But from my years of dealing with fleas, I feel the monthly drops are the best. I personally use Advantix, but Frontline also is a very good product. They have both been around for many years. The reason I go with Advantix is because it also treats for ticks hence the name.
Professional Pest Control
Pests of any kind are always going to be attracted to any area with easy excess to food, especially cockroaches and rodents; this is how they have survived for thousands of years. But you can keep this under control by simply hiring the services of your local pest control operator to come to your home and do a once a year spray for all pests, and also top up any bait boxes to keep the rodents under control also.
When your pest controller comes to your home for a service call, ask them for advice on any areas of concern you may have. Don’t forget they’re the experts and should be able to give good advice on most pest related problems.
Here at Best 1 Cleaning and Pest Control, we offer a safe and reliable pest treatment for homes and commercial properties, and also back up our services with a full guarantee.
