Carpet Spot Stain Removal
Stains on carpets can be unsightly and very hard to remove. To safely remove stains such as cordial, red wine, make-up, oils or food stains, you will require the help of a professional carpet cleaner. If the wrong spot cleaners are used to try and remove stains from carpets, they can permanently damage the fibres, making it even harder to remove.
In the picture below is a carpet with many small stains scattered all over. They won’t come out with just the steam clean. They need to be individually treated and extracted. A solvent based spot cleaner is used to remove the marks. When the solution is applied it will make the mark spread, so they need to be extracted using a powerful carpet steam cleaning machine. If the cleaning solution is left to long, the stain will become bigger and start to permanently mark the area.
Knowing which type of spot cleaner to use for the many different types of stains is a critical part in the success of stain removal from carpets. Whether to use hot or cold water, all these things need to be considered before attempting to remove a mark from a carpet.
With some fabric such as nylon, marks are much easier to remove. This is because the material is not as absorbent as a fabric like wool. Wool carpets will stain very easily and need a professional to remove stains like urine, water marks, cordial etc.
If a stain doesn’t come out with a steam clean, it means it is permanent and will require a different approach. To help remove more permanent stains, a method known as “heat transfer” is used. If this method doesn’t remove the mark completely, it will at worst make it a lot less noticeably. Not all stains can be removed; this is why it is important to hire the services of a professional carpet cleaner that will be able to determine whether the stain can or can’t be removed.
The best advice if a spill occurs is to use a clean white towel to blot up as much of the spill as possible. Try not to rub as this can cause some carpet types to spread the stain to a bigger area and can also damage the surface of the carpet. After as much of the stain has been blotted up, get another clean towel and place it over the mark and place a heavy object on it. This will help absorb much of the stain. If it hasn’t come out completely, it would be best to contact your local carpet cleaning service to help with the removal of the rest of the stain.
The sooner a stain is treated by a professional carpet cleaner the better the chances of completely removing it. If it is left for too long there is a good chance of permanent damage being caused.
