How to Keep Mould and Mildew at Bay

In cases where moisture is an issue such as rainforest, mountainous or high humidity areas you may even find mould and mildew forming on furniture and fittings in other parts of your home.

In The Bathroom

Ventilation is the number one cure of mildew and mould in the bathroom.

Most of us will close the bathroom door when showering, which creates a lovely enclosed environment for the moisture to collect.

Most bathrooms have an exhaust fan installed to combat the steam created from a hot shower but if your shower is excessively hot or long it will not be able to cope with the workload.

If you can, keep your bathroom doors open and reduce the heat and time spent in the shower.

Try not to leave damp towels or wet face cloths on the floor.

Another culprit you can blame for mould and mildew growth is the water that streams down the walls and glass after your shower.

With the simple investment and use of a squeegee, you will not only keep your walls and glass clear of water and thus mildew and mould, it will also reduce the build-up of soap scum. This gives the appearance of smears and it can cause damage to glass.

Over time this build up will infiltrate the tiny pores of the glass, thus rendering your glass marked for life.

The Laundry

If you have a dryer installed in the launder, it is essential to have good ventilation here also.

If you close the door to keep out the noise, you are definitely creating an environment similar to that in your bathroom.

Moisture will float in the air and settle on every surface offered.

Think about installing an exhaust fan, opening the back door or if you can, ducting the drier air outside.

The Kitchen

Whilst your kitchen may be well ventilated, mould and mildew will usually start to form around the kitchen sink.

To avoid this, the careful wiping up of spills is essential.
