4 Easy Steps To Get Mud Stains Out Of Carpet
Every parent knows the struggle of trying to keep carpet clean…
Kids are your number one culprits – for reasons yet unknown to science, they love to run through your home with their feet or shoes caked in mud, grass and who knows what! Pets are not much better, and of course you yourself make the occasional slip up.
So what should you do when mud gets in your carpet?
1. Relax
The best thing about getting mud in your carpet (if there even is a ‘best’ scenario)? There’s no hurry! This makes no sense, I know. If you spill wine or soy sauce on your carpet, you’d been cleaning it up in a hot second. But the trick to getting mud out of your carpet is letting it dry. Once the mud has dried it’s much easier to remove and you avoid running the risk of rubbing the mud deeper into the carpet.
If the mud is really, REALLY wet, you can gently blot it with a towel to remove excess moisture (do not, under any circumstances rub!).
2. Vacuum
Once you’ve let the mud completely dry, the next step is hoovering up that mess! Don’t just give it the once over – you want to vacuum as much of the mud up as you can. Vacuum in all directions and once you think you’ve vacuumed enough… vacuum again. The more you vacuum, the better.
Our hot tip? Use the hose function of your vacuum. The suction power will be a little stronger, and you’ll avoid moving the dried mud around too much on your carpet before it’s sucked up.
3. Get some detergent on it
The next step is to mix up a detergent solution. Our recommendation is one tablespoon of detergent to 2 cups of warm water. Once the detergent is completely dissolved, grab a clean cloth or towel and use it to blot the detergent solution on the carpet. Then, grab the dry end of the towel to absorb up the moisture and lift the stains.
Some extra tips to help you here…
#1 Hot Tip – Don’t drown the stain in detergent. Go slowly!
#2 Hot Tip – Use a detergent with inbuilt stain remover.
#3 Hot Tip – Repeat, repeat, repeat! You won’t get all of the stain out first try. Depending on the severity of the stain, you may need to do quite a lot of blotting.
