Flea Control in Summer

Summer is almost gone but if you have fleas then they won’t go so easy. Here is a bit of information on the flea and how to make your home flea free.

Having fleas around the home can affect the whole family including  your pets. Their bites itch and cause irritation and discomfort but they can also transmit infectious diseases so it is worth while making sure your house is totally flea free.

Like many pests, fleas are most active in spring and summer and they love the humid conditions, so there is no rhyme or reason for them not to love Queensland, but as an unwanted guest.

What do Fleas look like?

• Adults small, wingless , about 2.5 mm long.
• Their bodies a reddish brown color and are shiny in appearance.

As unpleasant as it may be, adult fleas have blood meals from there hosts. You will usually find them on your pets as they like hairy animals like dogs, cats and other domesticated or wild animals. How they move from place to place is through jumping as they are wingless. Eggs do not hatch on the animals rather they will hatch in cracks in the floor, carpets and rugs, bedding and upholstery.

When looking to see if you have fleas, there is a common indication in your pets. If they are constantly scratching or grooming themselves it might be good to have a look.

There are also some facts that are good to consider as well. In just one month one flea could become a 1000 and in one day your poor pets and yourself could get bitten about 400 times by one flea. All the more reason to make sure that you get rid of them as soon as possible.

How to get rid of fleas.

If you think you have fleas in your home do something about it as soon as you can before they breed and become more numerous.

1. First things first you need start with cleaning your carpets and rugs, floors, upholstery and cracks in the floors. By doing this your eliminating adult fleas and the eggs and larvae. These places are where the larvae grow and eat organic matter that collects in carpets and rugs. Eliminating there food is a step to eliminating them.
2. Second is to make sure you give your pets a good wash and talk to your vet about flea treatments for your pets. Grooming and washing there bedding would also be a good idea.
3. Third is to make sure all bedding is washed and any litter in bedrooms is cleared.

After all that is done you will be able to make sure that you have a flea free environment.
