Black ant habits
Black ants are attracted to sweet sugary food stuffs. They also spend time scavenging on rubbish, food scraps in kitchens and animal excrement, more commonly from dogs. They make a trail into your home or office gathering by the food source that they find.
As they take over cupboards and food sources they spread germs. They also make businesses and homes look unsightly. The best method to rid your office and home of black ants is to locate the colony and have this treated.
Preventing ants
As ants are attracted by a food source it’s a good idea to make sure there is none available. Food spills, et cetera, should be cleared straight away. This is a simple enough procedure to ‘train’ members in a household to do.
In an office environment it can be a little harder to encourage all staff to ‘pull their weight’ on tidying up and at times there will be some mess left behind. The more people that clean up after themselves in an office situation the better.
All food, wherever you are, needs to be stored correctly in airtight containers. Floors should be kept free of food scraps and anything that ants might find enticing.
Households with pets need to ensure that pet food is not left lying about attracting ants; any leftovers need to be disposed of.
